When to plant Garden Clematis
Garden clematis are perennial climbing vines that, depending on type, bloom in early spring, late spring, or summer to fall (NC State: spring to summer). Plant container-grown vines in spring (or fall in mild areas) in moist, well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soil, with the roots shaded by mulch or a groundcover and the top in sun. Prune by type: spring-on-old-wood types after flowering, summer-on-new-wood types nearly to the ground in late winter.
