A USDA hardiness zone is a label for your average annual extreme minimum winter temperature. Each numbered zone covers a 10°F band, and the a or b splits it into 5°F halves. That cold-tolerance signal does not set your frost dates or growing-season length, which vary separately by local weather and geography.
